Christchurch experienced its worst disaster in recent history after it was hit by a 6.3 magnitude earthquake on February 22, 2011. It was reported that almost half of the central business district was destroyed by the earthquake causing damage to 100,000 buildings, 10 percent of which needed to be demolished. The huge extent of construction activities in Christchurch means that in order to sustain the rebuild efforts, manpower has to be outsourced from overseas. Roughly 3000 migrant workers in Christchurch are Filipinos and today the biggest foreign workers group in Christchurch’s construction industry. Obrero paints a portrait of a recovering city and the Filipino workers who migrated for the rebuild.
