The Camaro Krypton featured a futuristic electroluminescent paint technology, and with the flip of a switch, the paint hue came alive with illuminated bowties on the body sides. Don’t expect the future-forward paint to make it to production, though, knowing it cost a cool $80,000 to cover a handful of body panels. However, the hue itself has a better chance at seeing production. The 2017 Chevrolet Camaro 1LE brought a more production ready hue of the bespoke Krypton Green color as seen on the concept. And after sitting down with Al Oppenheiser, lead Camaro engineer, we asked what was holding the color back from production. “Well, there are inputs that maybe the general public doesn’t realize, but we build the car at the Lansing Grand River assembly, so we also share it with the Cadillac ATS and CTS. There are only so many paint lines, and in order to run special color like [Krypton Green] it means that you can’t paint something else.
